Fasting is one of humanity’s oldest healing practices. Long before it became part of modern wellness, humans instinctively reduced or stopped eating during illness, while ancient medical and spiritual traditions used fasting for purification, healing and altered states of consciousness.
Today, science is giving us new ways to understand what happens when we stop eating. As the body shifts its metabolism, insulin levels change, fat becomes a major source of energy, and cellular processes such as autophagy — the recycling of damaged cellular components — become increasingly active. In this sense, fasting is not simply the absence of food; it creates a different physiological state in which the body adapts, conserves and repairs.
But could the effects of fasting extend beyond the physical dimension?
From fasting to Life Force
Traditional healing systems have long described health in terms of a vital energy – physical and mental – flowing through the body.
In Ayurveda, this energy is known as Prana. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, a related concept is Qi. Both traditions view health as depending, in part, on the harmonious movement of vital energy through the body.
Fasting has therefore been used not only as a physical practice, but also as a way of creating greater inner clarity. By temporarily reducing the demands of digestion, energy and attention become available for meditation, breathwork, yoga, qigong and other forms of energetic practice. These practices can transcend the physical sphere, opening the way to deeper metaphysical dimensions of healing, including transcendent, transpersonal, and karmic healing.
From this perspective, fasting becomes more than a metabolic intervention. It becomes a state of transition — from the dense physical body toward subtler levels of experience.
The body as a gateway
The modern scientific understanding of fasting and the traditional understanding of life force speak different languages, but they meet around one important observation: fasting changes the state of the body and the mind.
The metabolic shift can influence energy levels, appetite, mental clarity and physiological signalling. Traditional systems interpret some of these changes through concepts such as Prana, Qi, Agni and the subtle body.
Quantic Healing goes one step further. We believe that when the physical system becomes lighter and less occupied with digestion, energetic patterns and emotional material becomes more accessible to spiritual and transcendent human experiences.
This is where fasting becomes a bridge between physical healing and deeper transformations… tuning to Source.
Beyond the physical: Transcendent, Transpersonal and Karmic Healing
For many spiritual traditions, fasting is ultimately an exercise in surrender: temporarily stepping away from consumption to create space for awareness.
Combined with meditation, breathwork or energy healing, fasting may be experienced as a process of releasing what no longer serves us — physically, emotionally and energetically. Some clients describe greater intuition, deeper meditation, heightened sensitivity or a stronger sense of connection to something greater than themselves.
From this perspective, the healing process does not necessarily stop at the cellular level.
It can be understood as moving through layers:
Physical → Cellular → Energetic → Emotional → Spiritual → Transcendent, Transpersonal, Karmic
At the deepest level, fasting can become a practice of reconnecting with Source Energy.
The energy-healing therapies offered at QuanticHealing extend this idea further, addressing patterns held within the energetic field through three dimensions of healing, each working with a different layer of the human experience.
Transcendent healing moves beyond the individual ego, opening into deeper states of divine connection, expanded awareness, or pure being. Transpersonal healing embraces the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—while exploring experiences beyond the individual self, including archetypes, meaning, and higher consciousness. Karmic healing works with deeper patterns, including past-life imprints, ancestral influences, and recurring cycles that may shape present experiences and suffering.
These interpretations are spiritual and metaphysical rather than scientifically established, but they form an important part of how many clients perceive and experience profound healing stages.
From fasting therapy to medical wellness
This expanded understanding is also reflected in the evolution of fasting itself.
What once belonged largely to religious traditions and early therapeutic medicine has become part of modern medical-wellness programmes. The development of medically supervised fasting, particularly through the pioneer work of Dr. Otto Buchinger since1920, helped establish structured fasting programmes combining dietary restriction with rest, and therapeutic support.
Today, leading European wellness institutions combine fasting with medical diagnostics and mind-body practices. Only 5 also incorporate meditation, breathwork, Ayurveda, and some energy-based therapies as complementary approaches.
In chronological order, these are: Buchinger Wilhelmi the pioneer established in 1920, with locations in Germany, Spain and soon in France; Lanserhof with ocations in Austria, Germany, and soon to open in Spain; Vivamayr and Mayrlife , both in Austria; and last but not least, the more recent Engel Ayurpura established in Italy in 2023, whose distinctive integration of Ayurvedic tradition is already highly respected.
This represents an interesting evolution: from fasting as survival instinct, to fasting as medical therapy, to fasting as a tool for Transcendent, Transpersonal and Karmic Healing.
The deeper possibility
Perhaps the most interesting question is not simply what fasting does to the body, but what becomes possible when the body becomes quieter.
Science can investigate the metabolic and cellular changes. Traditional medicine can offer its own frameworks of Prana, Qi and balance. Spiritual traditions can interpret fasting as purification and connection.
From our experience, fasting offers a doorway into something beyond the physical — a process that begins with the cells, moves through the energetic and emotional layers, and may ultimately be experienced as a reconnection with Source.
Fasting, is not merely about taking something away. It is about creating space for transformation and, potentially, healing at the Transcendent, Transpersonal and Karmic dimensions of our being.
May you be healthy. May you be safe. May you be happy. May you live with ease.
